The Challenge: Enjoying Thanksgiving While Staying Performance-Ready
Thanksgiving is about family, gratitude, and yes—amazing food. My family celebrates this holiday, and it’s a time we cherish to connect, reflect, and enjoy each other’s company. But I know not everyone observes Thanksgiving, and that’s okay! The strategies I’m sharing today apply to any celebration or special occasion where food and traditions take center stage.
When I was a competitive athlete, I didn’t think much about how holiday eating affected my performance. I was focused on family, food, and fun—never on how what I ate might impact my recovery or training. But as I transitioned into athletic health coaching, I learned how intentional choices during these moments can fuel energy, recovery, and long-term success.
Now, as a mom to high-level athletes, I see the importance of balance. My son, playing junior hockey out west, has games right after Thanksgiving. For him, it’s about enjoying the meal while fueling his body for peak performance. This mindset applies to all of us: celebrate, enjoy, and fuel smarter.
